2017.10 - CONNOTATIVE AND DENOTATIVE DESIGN PROJECT

This project was completed in October of 2017 for my Intro to Visual Communication class at NYU. In this project, we explored semiotics, connotations, and denotations in design.

I explored the 'connotations' of baseball by expressing it without showing players, a field, or even a baseball bat. A common theme in baseball is 'making the impossible happen', which I explored in my drawing of an adolescent child wearing a Chicago Cubs jersey standing in a crowd taken in a Getty Images photo, stunned as he sees his favorite team win the World Series in 100 years. This drawing would then be turned into signage.

The above billboard comprised the second part of this project, in which I further explored what baseball means to people or what relates to it without depicting any aspect of the game being played. As baseball fans find joy and solace in watching their favorite players beat the odds, they feel truly belong at a ball game, and to promote baseball games in a given area, this billboard calls on people to thus "Run home." to their literal happy place.
